Grand Forks native George H. Walsh submitted the bill to the Territorial Legislature of Dakota Territory that called for the new state of North Dakota's university to be in Grand Forks. بعد ان كان جورج والش المنحدر من غراند فوركس قد قدم في وقت سابق مشروع قانون للهيئة التشريعية المحلية لإقليم داكوتا، دعاها فيه إلى تحديد غراند فوركس كموقع لجامعة الولاية الجديدة.
After graduating, he was commissioned in the 12th Infantry at Fort Sully in the Dakota territory and two months later was sent to Company G, Ninth Infantry at Camp Bowie in Arizona. بعد تخرجه، كُلف لأداء خدمته العسكرية في قوات المشاة الثانية عشرة في فورت سولي في إقليم داكوتا وبعد شهرين تم إرساله إلى وحدة قوات المشاة في كامب باوي في ولاية أريزونا.
